Halloween Time! DIY Costumes

Happy Halloween everyone!

I can barely hear myself think right now with all the firecrackers going off outside...I celebrated Halloween this past Friday, since I had a midterm exam tonight. This was definitely the most last minute Halloween costume I've ever made, but I thought I'd share it with you to give you some DIY inspiration.

I've never been a fan of pre-packaged costumes, so this year would be no different. The only thing different thing year is that I put the whole thing together in just 2 days! I decided on going as Black Swan this year. I love how dark and dramatic the costume and makeup is: perfect for Halloween. The costume would be even easier and cheaper to put together if you already have dance clothes, but it wasn't hard to find the right pieces nonetheless.

I picked up a crinoline from a Halloween shop and rolled over the top a couple times to make it pouf out like a tutu. The top is a corset I found at La Vie En Rose, which I topped off with some feathers. I purposely sewed them on instead of gluing them, so that it's still wearable after Halloween. The crown was the only cheap one I could find, so I blackened it with permanent black marker. The hair was the easiest part, since I do it up in a bun for work all the time anyways. Lastly, I watched a few makeup tutorials before attempting to do the eyes myself. I put on a layer of white cream as well, to get an even whiter complexion (yes, I actually CAN look paler). The makeup was done with NYX black powder eyeshadow and some old silver cream shadow. The blush is a dark rose colour, which gives a more sharp look than lighter shades. The look is finished off with a nice dark lipstick, mine has a dark purple hue.
My only suggestion is to put on a good base, something to seal the eye makeup. Unfortunately, mine began to blur as the night went on.

And to answer your question, that handsome looking guy in the mustache beside me is my boyfriend. He went for a Reno/Detective look this year: complete with aviators, gun, badge and handcuffs. The mustache was best best part...unfortunately it was pretty hard to keep it on, short of supergluing it!

I hope you all had a creeeepy weekend! What were you for Halloween?

Look of the Week: Tough Leather

So this past week was the last week of the Vancouver International Film Festival, and I had a chance to get out and see one of the films playing before it wrapped up for this year. I had been a few years back when I was in one of the films being shown; I was so excited to go to a film premier, so I dressed up in my best. I was surprised to find the fashion style for the event was a little more, erm, casual that I had anticipated. So this time I thought I'd go for a more tough/artsy look. This is much outside my comfort zone, but it was fun to try something new!

Patterned tights are a great way to make an outfit more interesting; I get so bored of plain tights after awhile. They aren't necessarily the warmest things, though, so in another month I'll have to layer them up with some over the knee socks and tall boots. If you're ever in need of something warm on your head, or just want to add a little more class to an outfit, you can never go wrong with throwing on a beret! I have a few in various colours and I love them all. The one I'm wearing here is actually my Nana's from Montreal...and if it works for Montreal winters, it will sure work here!

Look of the Week: Parisian Cafe

Well, it appears fall has come, bringing with it lots of homework and rainy weather, and so I must try to embrace it best I can. How shall I do so? By spending some downtime sipping liquid chocolate and tasting every macaron in the rainbow! I came across Thierry's Patisserie last week online and made it a goal to seek it out after class. It was the perfect place to go when you're all dressed up like you belong in Paris! And I must say, their macarons were amazing, and by my standards, not too pricey either. I highly recommend their blackberry and raspberry macarons, which each have a fresh berry right in the middle! So tasty! And if you've ever wanted to melt chocolate and drink it as is (and really, who hasn't), then try their hazelnut liquid chocolate. I felt like all I needed was to grab a baguette and some wine to make the experience complete.

I like taking little trips like this, to explore new tasty locales. It's a great mental break and I recommend doing this once a week to keep from the stress of life making you crazy! Dress up too, it makes you feel fresh and fun. And what better way to feel like your in a Parisian cafe? Throw on some red lipstick and heels. If you don't have time to take a whole afternoon off, find some tasty treats, bring them home, make yourself a London Fog, and cuddle up with some homework!

My outfit is inspired by the skirt I'm wearing, which was given to me by my Nana, and gave a little bit more of a vintage feel to the look. It's made of wool, too, which will be perfect for when winter hits. I usually shorten my Nana's skirts, but I like the length of this one;it keeps the vintage feel alive. However, if you're wanting a modern look, get rid of the skirt. Earlier in the day, I wore the long striped shirt to class as a dress with tights, some black flats and an oversized black blazer, for a more comfortable look. This outfit includes my favorite colour combinations, black red and white, and their boldness is a great way to stand out on an overcast day.
