Thrifty Thursday

Because I'm obsessed with dresses...

Cool cut-out, isn't it? It makes the most simple dress just that little bit cuter. It can't hurt that tangerine is a BIG trend this summer.

Look of the Week: Café and Lavender

My dream of sitting at a café in France can only be partially be fulfilled. And when I mean partially, I mean I can at least dress the part! I found this breezy shirt-dress on my girl's shopping trip to the states a couple weeks ago. I often find it hard to have that efforlessly chic look that Parisian women seem to emmulate. This dress is my attempt at accomplishing something comparable. Oh and of course, I haven't suddenly abandoned my colour binge: here I snuck in a bit of bright pink in my lipstick and my heels, just to keep me from looking washed out by the beige. This is the first asymmetrical hemline I've owned; I think I'm a fan of the style now, what do you think? Would this be a trend you would try?

You might be wondering what that thing is sitting on the table with me. Yes, that is my lovely ipad! Oh and there's a bushel of lavender- because I'm currently obsessed with it. But isn't that ipad case like nothing you've seen before? This is why I love the store Winners! It can even prop up your ipad so it's easier to use!

Thrifty Thursday

What a find! These are virtually brand new. The jewels on the toes make these a good pair to have for a dressy occasion when heels aren't appropriate. I think I'll keep them as my backup pair if my feet get tired of heels part way through the night.

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Shoes
Brand: Tommy Hilfiger
Price I Paid: $5.99
What its Worth: ~ $60 new

Aren't these cool? Again, virtually unworn; apparently this Salvation Army gets a lot of stuff from Zara that they couldn't sell. In this case, the reasoning is because the shoes are mismatched sizes. It actually worked out fine for me though, since one foot is slightly bigger than the other anyway! You could always just use one insole as well. For this price for an unworn pair of Zara pumps, you can't pass it up!

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Shoes
Brand: Zara
Price I Paid: $9.99
What its Worth: ~ $70 new

This skirt is very 50's, and makes me want to go to a picnic! It could be paired with a crisp white blouse or a loose sleeveless top.

One of my besties joined me on a thrifting trip a little while ago, and she picked up this gorgeous dress! She wore it to a 5-star restaurant for a conference dinner and happily received manny compliments on it. Needless to say, we've been planning on making another trip since. You can see the other pieces she style with the outfit below as well. Check out her awesome hair too! She did a reverse ponytail/apple turnover in case you want to take a crack at it yourself.

Look of the Week: Big Bold Colour

I mentioned the ridiculous deal I got on shoes in the States last week: one of those pairs makes its cameo here this week. I just so happens the fuschia in them matches perfectly with the silk Amanda Uprichard dress I thrifted earlier this year. I don't usually like to be too matchy-matchy, but with the bright orange and green in this outfit, I feel like it evens it out. The shoes seem super high, but they're actually not too hard to walk in; the platform mitigates the height of the heels, so that you're foot actually isn't at a very high angle. When you're feet do get tired though, a cute pair of black flats work too.

Time to inject some colour into your wardrobe! Believe it or not, it makes your mood a lot brighter too! Especially on days like today, where the weather is back to being its usual gloomy self.

Thrifty Thursday

Last week's Thrifty Thursday was all about colour. To change things up a bit, this week's find are all about vintage! These are the type of items you can't find anywhere else- other than pricey vintage shops. They just don't make dresses and shoes like they did back then.

I fell in love with the 50's style of these 2 dresses! The second is a volumous dress, with a nice bright blue pattern, and the second has a beautiful off-the-shoulder neckline and an equally full skirt. Both would be perfect for a cocktail/garden party.

The little greek metal tips are what made these shoes stand out. The heel is very low too, so they'll be good for longer walks. These would be great with cropped/tapered pants or leggings.

This dress doesn't quite fit with the other vintage pieces I found, but I love it nonetheless. It has this awesome beaded asymetrical detailing on the bodice, and it's structured with boning.

DIY Project: Scallopped Shorts

If you've got a pair of shorts you're thinking of getting rid of, consider doing this easy DIY instead. In the end, you'll have a super cute pair of shorts that are perfect for summer time! I got a huge bag full of clothes from my nana last year, and I've been working through it one by one, seeing what I can create to fit my style. I know scallopped shorts have been huge in the fashion blogosphere since last year, so I thought it would be an easy way to mimic the style. The best part of this DIY is you don't even need a sewing machine: just pick up some Fray Check from your local Walmart or fabric store, and you're set! This is also a great way to raise the hem on shorts without requiring a lot of work.

You'll need to decide how big you want the scallops to be, and pick a circular item that is that size. I chose a shot glass. Use a fabric pencil or some chalk to trace your scallops onto the shorts.

When you're done tracing them, use fabric scissors or regular ones that are equally as sharp to cut along the chalk line.

Once you've cut all the way along until the scallop pattern is complete, you'll want to go back and fix any fraying bits. Take your Fray Check and line the edges of your shorts with a thin layer. Give it time to dry and disappear. When it's dry, go back and cut off any loose threads; it should be much easier to clean them up now, because the Fray Check hardens the fabric slightly.

And voila! Once you've finished your lovely new pair of shorts, here's some inspiration for how to wear them!

Happy Mother's Day!

It couldn't have been a more fantastic day this Sunday, which made it perfect for heading outside with your mom for a patio lunch. I spent the day lounging at the Fort Wine Co. with my mom and nana sipping blueberry wine in the shade. Before that though, I spent the morning whipping up an adorable mini breakfast bar, which (of course) I got the inspiration for on Pinterest here. I made mini everything: mini berry smoothies, mini pancakes, mini french toast dippers, mini fruit bites, mini milk glasses, mini macarons, and mini parfaits. It was a mini feast! I can't wait to try all the other food ideas I've collected on my Pinterest board now...

I also spent yesterday down at the Seattle Outlet Mall (road trip!!) with my lovely friend Mercedes @mercedesbook and found some great new summer clothes and shoes. The drive was awesome due to the fantastic weather, and we enjoyed a little piece of the American Dream, which consisted of eating a Jack in the Box meal of chicken nuggets, burger, fries and a drink...all for $4.50: only in America. Oh and did I mention the super cheap macarons and bottle of $2.50 wine from Trader Joes?? Very good day.

I finally found the exact pair of nude pumps I've been looking for for the last year. And they're BCBG too! It's hard to say no when the shoes are 50% off, and then Buy One Get One 50%, and then also 20% the total. Unreal. No guilt here :)

For those of you who haven't heard back from me yet, I'll be getting to all of your lovely comments this weekend! Currently playing catch-up!
