Look of the Week: Polished City Girl

I wouldn't exactly call myself a foodie, but I get very excited about trying new places to eat in Vancouver...and some I get excited about going back to over and over again! If you haven't tried Meat and Bread on Cambie and Hastings, this is your kick in the pants: go try it! It's simple and it's gooooood. We tried one of each of their sandwiches: porchetta, spicy meatball, and grilled cheese.

As for my look, it was one of the nicer days we've had in Vancouver as far as summer goes, so naturally a dress was in order. I picked up this Calvin Klein number at Ross Dress for Less in Washington (one of my favourite stores to hit when I'm in the States). I compare it to Winners but much, much cheaper! And you'll notice I've got those BCBG nude pumps on again. They are my most versatile new pair of shoes, and they give any look a polished finish. I might add that I walked all day in those shoes and I survived pretty well, with the addition of a few blisters. Not too bad considering the height! The purse used to be my mom's; I think she might want it back now that it's been given new life...

Finally we ended off the day with a stop at Society in Yaletown for drinks. Now, when you see the photo of it you'll probably be wondering where the drink is: it's under that massive pile of cotton candy!

Thrifty Thursday

What a week...here's some thrifty thursday finds I can't wait to wear!

The design on the back of this dress is what makes it special. Definitely something different, no? It's the perfect dress to twirl in too, incidentally.

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Dresses
Brand: Forever 21
Price I Paid: $5.99
What it's Worth: ?

It's a bit big, and I'll probably need to take it in under the arms, but the skirt has great volume to it once it's hanging on your hips, and with the satin sash, it's easy to bring in the waist. A very classic dress for my wardrobe!

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Dresses
Brand: French Spy
Price I Paid: $8.99
What it's Worth: You can still see the dress here under 2007 fall/winter, but no prices are given.

This is going to be perfect for the sheer summer tops, to let a little colour peek out.

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Shirts
Brand: Elena intimates
Price I Paid: $2.99

DIY Project: Strapless to Halter Dress

If you can't start wearing those summer dresses quite yet...you might as well get them prepared for when it's finally warm enough!

Now, how many of you can't stand strapless dresses? I'm going to go ahead and assume a lot of you just sighed in frustration at the thought of pulling that damn dress up all day long. It's annoying, right? I bought this great dress from Urban Behaviour a couple years ago, but the top is a little loose, and it's not very comfortable without straps to hold it up. The solution? Make it into a halter dress!

To do this, you're obviously going to need matching fabric. Lucky for me, the dress came with a matching belt, so there's my fabric! Then find matching thread, and get yourself a needle and scissors.

You're going to loop the belt (or fabric) from one end of the top of the dress to the other. Pin them to the dress and then try it on to make sure the straps are in the right place.

As you can see, I chose to keep the belt intact. That way, if I ever chose to, I could use it as a belt again. If it bugs you, you can always cut off the buckle. You'll see below that the buckle just sits inside the dress, and can't be seen.

Use a thick needle and sew the belt (or fabric) to the dress, where you've pinned it.

When you're done that, you're finished! No more annoying strapless dress that you have to keep pulling up all night.

Good luck with your own DIY projects; let me know if you try this one!

Look of the Week: Cozy Chic

It's been a very wet spring and beginning of summer for Vancouver. The weather has been, well, uncooperative to say the least. Today was honestly the first nice day I feel we've had in a while, and who knows how long it will last? It leaves me feeling unwilling to wear cute dresses and wanting to throw on a comfy sweater and jeans. Then you need to leave the house for errands. What's a girl to do? Turn that outfit instant-chic by throwing on a pair of heels! Nothing takes an outfit to the next level quite like taking you a few more inches off the ground. You may have already seen these BCBG pumps I picked up in the States a while ago. I'm currently in love with them, as they elongate the legs and work with any outfit: definitely a great staple in any wardrobe. You'll also start to notice that when I wear jeans in summer I tend to roll them up a bit. To me it gives them a fresh look, and an extra plus is it allows you to show off your adorable summer shoes even more!

I'm currently on training right now, and there is literally no Internet here, so I'm doing my best to run over to the nearest Waves cafe for wifi to get some blogging done. You'll be hearing more from me more again once I'm home next week! I've got lots of new posts to share with you soon!

Thrifty Thursday

Here's my finds for last week. I'm already super excited for what I have to show you next week...must refrain from spoiling it! I have a complete inability to not wear things I just bought. It's part of the rush of a purchase: the post purchase bliss!

I bumped into my neighbour while we were thrifting, and she pulled this cute number out of the shirts section! To my delight, it fit perfectly. It's a little wrinkled now, but it'll be all fixed up in no time.

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Shirts
Brand: Club Monaco
Price I Paid: $5.99
What it's Worth: ?

This is one of those dresses that looks much better on than it does on the hanger. Colour blocking is huge this season, and here's a great way to wear it.

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Dresses
Brand: Allegra
Price I Paid: $8.99
What it's Worth: ?

This one still had the original tags on it! It's hard to tell, but the dress is light army green. It think it'll go really well with a light brown braided belt around the waist.

Store: Salvation Army
Section: Dresses
Brand: Unknown
Price I Paid: $12.99
What it's Worth: $39.95

Braided Hair Tutorial

I received a request for a hair tutorial a little while ago when I wore this to the University of the Fraser Valley's Absolute Style Grad Fashion Show. I'm not much of a hair stylist (and by not much I mean not at all), so you know when I say a hair-do is easy, I mean EASY! This will literally take you 5 minutes tops. If you're looking for more inspiration, check out Lo of Deliciously Yours; she does a fantastic braided 'do!

Pin the braid to the side of your head with some bobby pins.

You can position the braids side by side once you have them pinned down behind your ears. The pin the braids in place on top, so they don't slide around on you.
