Vancouver Fashion Week's #VFWFashionFriday Contest

I have some very exciting news to share with all of you!! Back in July, I won the first #VFWFashionFriday contest of the season for Vancouver Fashion Week and VIP tickets to their Spring/Summer 2013 show this coming September. I won by tweeting the below picture to #VFWFashionFriday on friday (of course!), after it was selected by Kenton Magazine's Editor-in-Chief Alexander Liang. I was honoured to say the least, and overjoyed to again be going to Vancouver Fashion Week!

As a result, VFW asked if I would be the face of their Fashion Friday Contest campaign. How could I resist?! I must say, picking out 6 outfits for the shoot was much harder than I thought; usually I will ponder in front of my closet for hours over just one outfit. Eventually the inspiration fell into place and I came up with 6 very different styles to transition from summer to fall. We has such a blast, and director Katrina Bollozos and photographer Sheila Arias as well as our Vancouver Vogue photographer (assistant on this shoot) did such an amazing job. We were one hilarious group to work with!

If you're a starving student like me, or just want to save yourself a good chunk of money, I highly recommend you fashionable Vancouverites get in on this contest! It's the fastest way to win a set of VIP tickets to a day of shows at Vancouver Fashion Week (September 18-23).

You can also check out the VFW blog and facebook page to get all the latest updates on the event as well as local and international fashion articles to get you psyched for September!

If you're going to VFW, let me know which days; if I'm there, come say hi! We'd love to snap your look for Vancouver Vogue's VFW series!

Dress Design Collab: Styling the Vancouver Vogue Dress

I've been waiting to share this post with all of you for some time now: I've had this gorgeous dress hanging on my dressform at home, patiently turning out post after post, getting all the more anxious about the final styling of the Vancouver Vogue Dress. It's an amazing feeling to see the dress go from a sketch to a beautiful piece I can wear in such a short time. It's even more amazing to think not a single other person in the world has this dress!

To keep in line with the classic yet trendy style here at Vancouver Vogue, I styled the dress with modern and vintage accessories- all in classic black to counter the trendy tangerine hue. The bun gives the look an Audrey Hepburn feel (as you've seen here) while the dramatic volume keeps it current. I couldn't decide on celeb-inspired oversized shades or my vintage Ray Ban look-a-likes, so I used them both! Keep your eyes peeled for the video I'll be posting soon and you'll see another way to style the dress!

I am so thrilled with what Rebecca Elizabeth did with our ideas and how she put it all together: this is one talented girl we have here! If you love this dress as much as I do, I'm sure you're going to be asking how you can get your own made. Well fashionistas, you're going to have to wait a little while! This budding designer has a lot on her plate this coming school year, finishing her design program at the University of the Fraser Valley. If you want to keep in touch though, and see what she's up to, follow her on twitter. This is definitely one talent to watch!

Thanks again to Rebecca Elizabeth for making what will be now known as the official dress of Vancouver Vogue! Stay tuned later this week for a designer exclusive of Rebecca Elizabeth during our styling sesh!

Dress Design Collab: The Final Cut!

At last it's here! The moment you've all been waiting for: the unveiling of my first designer collaboration with Rebecca Elizabeth Designs! I've decided to bump the unveiling of the dress up a bit because of a certain video which will be airing this week (more on that later!).

Over the past month, you've seen the inspiration, the process, the time and effort that goes into making such a piece and now it's finally time to see what the final result is. The classic boatneck, the tea length skirt, the deep V back with cut-out bow...it's finally here, side-by-side with the lovely designer Rebecca Elizabeth!

As you saw in the sketching phase, we wanted to create a piece that would embody the style of Vancouver Vogue. I consider that style to be fresh and trendy, with a vintage flair. Next week, you'll see how I chose to style the dress so that it fits with this classic feel. Think Audrey Hepburn 2012!

What do you think?? Would you rock this look?

Thrifty Thursday

As we move towards fall (eep, already?!), it's time to start thinking about darker shades and cozy knits. Let the thrifting begin!

This dress has a simple front to offset the cute bows on the back. It's black satin so I'm saving it for a few months from now, when the weather is more appropriate. It'll be perfect for a girl's night out!

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Unknown
Section: Dresses
What I Paid: $8.99
What it's Worth: ?

There's nothing like a cozy sweater to get you excited about cooler weather! Hopefully I won't have to pull this out for a while...but I couldn't pass up buying it now: I just love the wide neckline!

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Garage
Section: Sweaters
What I Paid: $6.99
What it's Worth: ~$40

I have no idea if this baby is real or not, but either way, I'm a fan! I love the classy look of Chanel, and this necklace has just the right amount of sparkle. You can actually wear it backwards too and have the chanel symbol hang down your back; perfect for a plunging back.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Chanel ?
Section: Jewelry (Cashier's desk)
What I Paid: $7.99
What it's Worth: ???

Dress Design Collab: Making the Dress

As the next step in our Designer Collaboration with Rebecca Elizabeth Designs, our designer gets right to work on the final version of the Vancouver Vogue dress. She uses her custom-made pattern to trace out every panel of the soon-to-be dress. She's rocking those glasses, looking super studious as she sews away!

We're almost there, people! The final unveiling is so close!

Thrifty Thursday

The deals keep on rolling in! This week, I went crazy for more Zara and mint (are you even surprised?) and stumbled on another great brand!

This jacket had a small tear in the seam along the back, but after I was done with it, you couldn't tell the difference! What an awesomely edgy piece. I'm looking forward to transitioning this one into fall.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Zara Basic
Section: Jackets
What I Paid: $6.99
What it's Worth: $139

I was pleasantly surprised to find Tristan in the thrift shop! I fell in love with the silk ruffled detailing. This will be great for dressing up a basic dress.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Tristan
Section: Sweaters
What I Paid: $5.99
What its Worth: ~$50

Speaking of basic dresses...this one is a perfect closet staple! Simple, my favourite colour, and it has a great form-fitting appeal to it. The racerback makes it a little different, but is still basic enough to be very versatile.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Zara Women
Section: Dresses
What I Paid: $6.99
What its Worth: $79.90

Dress Design Collab: Muslin Fitting

Phase 3 of the Dress Design Collaboration with Rebecca Elizabeth Designs is creating the rough version of the dress. She used a cheaper material called muslin to do a test-run of what the final dress will look like. It was crazy to try it on and see what it is becoming! From paper to a dress just like that!

It's all starting to come together: all we're missing now is the colour, the bow, and a few little adjustments. We're almost there!
