Thrifty Thursday

I popped into my favourite Salvation Army this week, picked out a few things that caught my eye, and headed to the cashier to pay for my new-found treasures. To my gleeful surprise, everything was 50% off! I had tried to be all responsible and originally decided against purchasing a Zara quilted leather jacket that I had found, but as soon as I heard '50%' off I called to my brother: "Quick! Grab the jacket!"

The see-through shirt trend appears to be here to stay, and I like that the lace on this one is a little thicker than most; you can wear a black bralette underneath and get away with it. You could also pick a highlighter hue tank for an infusion of colour.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Garage
Section: T-Shirts
What I Paid: $3.99
What it's Worth: ?

Ah, the jacket I almost didn't buy...and I'm glad I caved and snatched it up! There's a small tear on the shoulder I'll have to fix, but a $140 jacket for $3.50: that's worth a few stitches. This is going to be great with a black and white t-shirt and Rayban Wayfarers.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Zara Trafaluc
Section: Miscellaneous clothing
What I Paid: $3.50 (it was 50%!!)
What it's Worth: ~$140

Spring brings with it fresh colours in pastel shades: combine that with sheer fabrics and you have a look that's soft and feminine, like this skirt.

Brand: H&M
Section: Skirts
What I Paid: $4 (50% off!!)
What it's Worth: ~$30

Look of the Week: Casual Sunday Style

Sunday is the weekend day you want to get out and enjoy yourself once all the errands have been run. Whether it's coffee with a friend, or a casual walk through town, you want to look your best. The key to weekend-wear is to be comfortably fashionable, and a great piece to help you look the part is a maxi dress/skirt. A word about this particular skirt: I'm generally considered of average height, which is not ideal for a skirt like this because it doesn't exactly elongate the legs. My quick fix? Nude heels! Next, pick out a slouchy sweater or sweatshirt to keep the look casual, and add some dramatic sunglasses and statement jewelry to amp up the glam. Now, I know it's not Sunday today, so you can make your outfit do double-duty and make it work for your study-wear as well! You can check out my original study-wear inspiration from last year too.

Queen Elizabeth Park made for a fantastic shoot on one particularly beautiful day last week. We teamed up with friend and Pin Up/burlesque dancer Lottie Libido to take some casual Spring photos. The fountain made for a very amusing backdrop- you can see some of our outtakes on the Vancouver Vogue Facebook Page!

Thrifty Thursday

Happy Thrifty Thursday! I am still on my shirt hunt right now, so I was happy to find two new ones to add to my wardrobe, and you know I'm always a sucker for bows and ruffles. I've also managed to rip a pair of my favourite comfy jeans, so I was very excited to come across a perfect (cheap!) replacement for them the last time I was in the thrift shop.

For those of you who are searching for that perfect pair of jeans, thrift shops always have a very large selection of jeans of all shapes and sizes. These unworn Zara jeans have the perfect amount of stretch and are the quintessential skinny cut. A tip for thrifting for jeans: take a careful look over them before you buy them! I may have neglected to check these over and didn't notice the tear along the back seam. Oops! Needless to say, the rip kind of expanded the first time I wore them. And that is why I have a sewing machine! I managed to pull apart the seam and sew them back together with the rip hidden. I still love these jeans, but I could have saved myself a scare if I had checked them over first!

You can just baaaarely see the rip along the back seam at the very bottom. Funny thing is I didn't even notice it while taking these photos!

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Zara Basic Dept. Denim
Section: Jeans
What I Paid: $8.99
What it's Worth: $79.90

You know I can't resist bows. I was drawn to the contrasting black scalloped neckline; it has a very cutesy and classic vibe that I can see wearing with black tights and black ballet flats.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: H&M
Section: Short sleeve Knits
What I Paid: $5.99
What it's Worth: ?

Ruffles always stand out to me on a clothing rack, and these ones have slightly faded stripes that feel just a tad vintage.

Look of the Week: Ruby Slippers

I shared with you a DIY for making these ruby slippers on Valentine's Day, so I thought today I would share with you how I would wear them! The weather was very kind to us this past week, so I was able to pull out my straw fedora for a light, spring look. The combination of stripes with a hat like this is makes for a Parisian style. Add some vivid red lips to seal the deal! Red, white, and black are my go-to colour combination for a look that is both feminine and timeless.

If you find yourself to not really be a jewelry person, but want to jazz up your clothes somehow, consider looking for embellished pieces like this Zara sweater I thrifted. The shoulders are bedazzled with beads and jewels to give a fierce look to an otherwise tame sweater. You don't have to shy away from combining chunky jewelry and embellishments, though: go all out!

Valentine's Love: DIY Glitter Heels

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you! In honour of such a lovely day, I thought I would share with you something red and sparkly! If my last DIY post left you wanting a little more glitter, well I have the perfect fix for you! I was really to part with these super-comfy heels, until I discovered this pin on Pinterest, which gave me some inspiration to revive them.

Like my last DIY, you don't require anything too fancy to do this project: just an old pair of shoes, some liquid glue, water, fine glitter, a paint brush (in my case, an old make-up brush), and a container for the glue.

I stuffed the shoes with a plastic bag to keep some of the glitter out of the inside of the shoe: a tip I learned here. It turns out, it makes the shoes easier to hold onto while you're applying the glue too.

Most websites seem to recommend using Mod Podge, but I'm lazy (and cheap) so I decided to do a 1:0.5 mixture of liquid glue and water instead. I'm sure Mod Podge would work better, but I had no problems with my concoction! Just empty the bottle of glue into your container, and then fill the empty bottle up half way with water and add it too to the container.

Once you have your mixture in the container, put on the lid and shake well.

Paint on a layer of the glue mixture with your brush. Only do 1 shoe before adding glitter, otherwise the glue with dry before you get to putting the glitter on!

Once you've covered the shoe in layer of glue, start shaking on the glitter! Prepare yourself with lots of paper towel: you are going to make a mess. Press down lightly on the glitter once you've covered the shoe, just to make sure it sticks.

Shake of the excess glitter and let sit to dry. Start on the second shoe!

Once you're done both shoes...

Grab some hairspray and spray each shoe to make sure that glitter doesn't go anywhere!

And you're all done. Now just tap your heels together three times and say 'there's no place like home'!

If you decide to make your own pair of DIY glitter heels, tweet me a pic to @vancouvervogue of the finished product so I can share them with everyone!

Look of the Week: Concrete Jungle

The statement piece in this week's look is a vintage Escada wool skirt I thrifted. The design makes up for its modest hemline with a thigh-high slit. To compliment the vintage feel, I added some classic pieces like patent heels and oversized sunglasses. While I usually prefer to stick to one statement piece, I don't think the striped shirt is too much, since the skirt is a solid colour. For a simpler look, you could swap out the striped top for a black turtleneck or boatneck shirt. Either would give a bit of a Hepburn-esque quality to the outfit.

I can't say I would recommend wearing this to the office unless you have a very liberal dress code, but I just love the idea of wearing it while out downtown, among all the concrete  and business suits. Dare to stand out! If you're looking for something to wear for Valentine's still, take a look through the skirt racks at your local thrift store- you'll find all kinds of unique and seductive skirts like this one (not to mention it'll be a bargain!).
