Thrifty Thursday

On days like today, where it's an on-and-off monsoon outside...you can't help but start to look for cozier options...

Embellishments are a key feature to look for when I'm thrifting. This one is interesting because of the chains along the neckline: no necklace necessary here!

Capes became a huge hit in the last couple years. I love the Burberry-style pattern that makes it look classic rather than boho.

Aaaah my comfiest new sweater! I'm personally quite proud of this 100% cashmere find. It's pretty big, so it definitely as the 'boyfriend' sweater feel, which means more cashmere to cozy up in!

Look of the Week: Modern Vintage

I often get so carried away with all the modern brands I find while thrifting that I forget to search for those precious vintage pieces. It's probably because they're also harder to shop for; sizing isn't always right, it may need to be altered (time to get rid of those shoulder pads!), and it can be hard to define between 'vintage' and 'junk' when it's on the hanger. If you find yourself with a piece you're not sure about, try it on anyway! Sometimes they really do look horrid on the hanger, but they can become beautifully fitted and feminine once you try it on. This dress looked pretty blah on the hanger, but I loved the colour and the length and I had a sneaking suspicion that it would have a slim fit. I'm so glad I tried it on! I loved it...as soon as I got rid of those pesky shoulder pads...yuck.

For fear of looking like I came out of a time machine, I used modern accessories in solid colours to keep the look fresh. I love wearing nude heels with calf-length dresses and skirts because you look super tall and gives an overall elegant vibe. With a dress that is completely monochrome (even the belt!). It's a good idea to add a dose of colour and some detail in there, and a statement necklace works perfect for that!

Thrifty Thursday

Apparently it's sweater season in the thrift store lately, because I just keep finding awesome cardigans and sweaters that I just have to bring home! Too bad it's summer...ah well, sometimes you have to buy out of season!

This cardigan is a cool colour; it's easy to have lots of blacks and whites, but it's great to have some unique hues like this to give your plain outfits some buzz.

Who doesn't love bows? This H&M sweater has the cutest little bows on the pockets that make it that little bit special.

There are sweaters, and then there are COMFY sweaters. The blend of lamb's wool and cashmere is awesome- if it weren't for thrifting, I'd never have sweaters this cozy. And can you seen that adorable ruffle on the neckline too??

Fairmont Afternoon Tea: Crisp White and Blue

We headed to the airport today for afternoon tea at the Fairmont Hotel. There are not enough excuses in this city to dress up, so one needs things like this to come along and offer an occasion! It was a bit of a gloomy day, too gloomy for a bright sundress, so instead I opted for crisp white and cobalt blue to brighten my look. I was excited to pair the outfit with my new Stella & Dot accessories, which added some detail to the otherwise solid colour scheme. When going to tea, I love to wear statement rings and bracelets, since you spend so much of your time with your hands daintily wrapped around a cup of tea: a photo-op waiting to happen! And as you have seen on my Summer Colours Inspiration Board, cobalt and tangerine are one of my new favourite colour combinations, so I added a touch of the orange hue to my nails to enhance the look. And voila! A fresh look for a classy afternoon of tea and deliciously fashionable eats!

Thrifty Thursday

One thing you are always sure to find in the thrift store is great variety! This week: a sweater, a dress, AND a super unique top are on my list of finds.

Cardigans are always great to have an assortment of. Don't you ever find that you're looking for one to put over a top and you just can't seem to find one that's the right colour? Thrifting cardigans is a great way to stock up on a whole assortment of colours- like this one!

Look of the Week: Preppy Nautical Style

On a dreary weekday, we headed out to Crescent Beach for a change of scenery. It was pouring rain and didn't make for the best of circumstances while taking photos, but it was fun nonetheless, and the town still looked just as quaint. Where else would be better for a nautical outfit post than along the shoreline?

One of my best friends has been insistent on a Kate Middleton-inspired post, and finally I got my hands on all the elements required to re-create this look which the Duchess of Cambridge wore last year. Coloured demin is still a big trend this season, and as you've seen from my Summer Colour Inspiration Board, this hue is on my list of must-haves right now. I kept the look preppy, like the Duchess, by adding a blazer to the coloured jeans, but instead opted for bright cobalt rather than navy while accessorizing. The result is a nautical twist.

I also played around with a new lip colour (NYX Matte Lipstick in Indie Flick): an orange to contrast my complexion. I actually quite like it! If you're not a fan of big change or out-there colours, try a red with just a tint of orange. The only thing I would recommend is adding a bluish colour to your lips before adding the orange lipstick: this will keep your teeth from looking yellow. Don't ask me why, it's just some advice I heard a long time ago, and it seems to work!

How to Dress for a Boating Trip: Breezy Summer Fashion

Summer means excursions and trips to enjoy the outdoors and get some sun; it's a great time of year, but sometimes I struggle to find fashionable outfits that are casual enough for these types of activities. My goal when toning down my looks is to keep the outfit simple, while adding special details which keep it looking chic. For day 1 of our recent boating excursion up the BC coast, I opted for a Parisian-inspired look with a simple striped tank and jeans. I dressed it up with my new Olivia Bib necklace from Stella & Dot to give it that pop of colour and 'chicness', and a straw fedora to give it a breezy summer feel. As you've seen from my Summer Colour Inspiration post, you'll know what goes great with this: mint! So I finished off the look with a mint cardigan to keep things looking light and fresh, yet cozy, since the weather was still not that warm.

So what's the key to looking chic yet casual this summer? Keep your clothes simple and accessorize to give your outfit that extra pop that will make it stand out!

Inspiration: Summer Colours and Prints

It's funny how each season, a certain colour or print combination dominates my mind when shopping and styling. This summer, the combination of mint, coral, gold, and chevron print have me excited for all the summer styling possibilities.

The vintage-gone-modern chevron pattern works great with almost any colour, thanks to it's black and white print, but I particularily love how it looks with coral or mint. Gold is a great accent for all of these, and I find mint goes especially well with a lighter rather than yellowy gold. Rose gold is also beautiful with mint. Hopefully the mood board below will help you see what I'm talking about, and I've even found a few items online that work with these colours and patterns.
