Olympic Spirit: Fashion for the Winter & Snow

The Winter Olympics in Sochi have just come to a close, but I'm still in the spirit, since our spring weather just turned into winter weather over night, and we're now living in a snowy winter wonderland! Naturally, I had to represent our good ol' Canada with some iconic 2010 mittens, but I gave a nod to the Russians with a furry cossack hat too. I love faux fur, and this hat is such an awesome winter accessory...now I just wish I could wear it more without getting wierd stares...

I literally raced out the door for a photoshoot the second the snow started falling because I was so excited for an excuse to try out my brand new boots! I bought them during the holidays, after searching for years for an acceptable pair (keep my feet warm, yet are cute and not overly clunky). I love, love, love these boots, so if you're looking for a pair that will do the job and still look good, they come highly recommended! As if they couldn't get any better, they even roll down to show off a stylish fur lining and an adorable plaid tongue!

Thrifty Thursday

I've been having some serious thrifting withdrawal as of late. I really wish Salvation Army wasn't closed on Sundays, it seems to be the only day I have free to shop... So here's a few pieces I found in recent months that I haven't gotten around to sharing here yet:

This blouse isn't exactly winter wear, but I think spring is coming soon enough! I love that the deep V neck is on the front and the back. Very dramatic.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand:
Section: Short Sleeve Blouses
What I Paid: $6.99
What it's Worth: ?

Do remember seeing this already here? There is chain running up and down the front: a unique detailing that gives just a hint toughness.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand; Dex
Section: Sweaters
What I Paid: $5.99
What it's Worth: ~ $40

Can one ever truly have enough sweaters? Cable knits are great, but they're usually also very chunky. I really like how this one is nice and light, plus it's Guess, so the quality is there too.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Guess
Section: Sweaters (Note: I found it in the Large section, and it is labelled large, but it fits like a Medium)
What I Paid: $9.99
What it Costs In-Store: ~ $70

Look of the Week: Prim & Proper with Warby Parker

A super preppy outfit goes a long way on a dark dreary day! Work outfits can get really drab really fast when all there is is a few blouses and pencil skirts in your rotation. So switch out your beige cardigan for a coloured one, throw on a statement necklace, and if your a four-eyes like me, get yourself a pair of stylish spectacles! Warby Parker introduced me to their fabulous brand of eyewear recently, and I was hooked by their funky frames: everything from cat-eyes to violet-specked designs! I used their virtual try-on program to find my favourite frames to go with my preppy look. They aren't available for virtual try-on, but I highly recommend checking out their Leith Clark collection, which also has some truly beautiful frames with the perfect touch of femininity. I'd want one of each of these pairs...something for every look of the week!

If you need another reason to love these guys, for every pair of glasses sold, Warby Parker distributes a pair to someone in need through their non-profit partners!

Look of the Week: Urban Chic with Smitten Designs

We're having a particularly harsh winter chill this week, so that meant turtlenecks and faux fur were a must-have. I don't wear them much, but I really love how elegant and timeless a black turtleneck looks. Also, they're great because they make a perfect canvas for a beautiful statement necklace. I had lots of fun playing dress up with all kinds of gorgeously elegant pieces by Smitten Designs this weekend at Gigi B on Granville Island, and found some great pieces to pair with my urban chic look of the week.

Laurie Simpkins, the local talent behind Smitten Designs, creates pieces with eye-catching materials like freshwater pearls and swarovski crystals, and her style can be eloquently surmised as elegant and timeless, which makes it perfect for daywear or eveningwear. Amongst all the fun, I found my favourite: a blue swarovski crystal pendant on a gold-plated rolo chain. The colour is so rich, and the rough texture of the crystals is so unique. I love how it looked on my black turtleneck; it really let the colour speak for itself. Another favourite was the sparkling silver Swarovski crystal pendant with leaf chain: as if the massive stone wasn't gorgeous enough, the leafy details on the chain give off a beautiful shimmer effect.

So if you're ever hankering for a trip to Granville Island (and let's be honest, who doesn't), then pop in and say hello to the lovely ladies at Gigi B in Net Loft and see these gorgeous Smitten Designs gems for yourself!
