Vancouver Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014: Day 6

The last day of runway shows for the Vancouver Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 season brought an assortment of all kinds of fashion goodies. Rockers in wigs made for a head-banging first show from 2HB, and Kamila Gawronska wowed us with her nod to retro silhouettes (the high stiff-collared coats were perfection)...and then there was the finale! Kaye Morales' models, adorned with demonic halos, stunned in dramatic dresses in oxblood and black. It was dark, it was steamy, and it was extremely well constructed. And who could forget Lava Woman: a party in a runway show, she had a ton of colour, and a crazy amount of pattern, but she always pulls it off in an over-the-top fashionista type of way. In other words, she rocked it. The images really do speak for themselves: a great dose of inspiration in just a few short hours. Thanks to Greg ShieldKuna Photography, and Yiheng Yu for the runway images!

I was very gleeful to see Manu Bennett from the TV show Arrow and Spartacus was sitting just across the runway. Even more awesome? He was wearing a jacket from local designer Valerio Moda, who just showed at Vancouver Fashion Week on Day 2! Looks good too, doesn't it? The mix of leather and knit paneling would make this a great fall jacket (because who can wait for Spring)!

Vancouver Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014: Day 5

I realized just how spectacular Day 5 of Vancouver Fashion Week was when I went to pick out pictures to feature here...and had a very hard time picking! I would be very happy if many of the designs I saw on the runway would somehow appear in my closet. That would be just awesome. Fever, Goldie, and Angel Eye London always put together collections that have me itching for a shopping spree. They put together designs which are very wearable, but have a touch of uniqueness to them. For instance, sequins seem to be a big trend for Spring/Summer 2014, but Goldie has taken that trend and made it even trendier by making it into a crop top. On the more conceptual side of things, Dong De Xi's collection had soft yet structured silhouettes which made me fall in love instantly. I thought the sheer ruffled detailing around the ankles was especially creative. I can feel a DIY coming on! It's like someone planned to have 'pretty' designs on one day; one after another, out came gowns of gorgeous tulle, lace, embroidering, scooping backs, and all kinds of volume. The bridal collection from Veejay Floresca was absolutely stunning, with the designs being anything but ordinary. The attention to detail is impeccable, and the couture gowns would be perfect for a bride who wants to turn every head in the room.

I love combining the old with the new, so for my Day 5 look I took some elements from 80's style (monochrome and bright hues) and used modern accessories to breathe new life into an old dress. I spray painted the heels earlier this year for VFW's Fall/Winter shows after picking up a pair of plain white Aldo pumps from the thrift store. Nothing much to it, just stuffed them with newspaper, taped up the sole, and sprayed 'em down a few times. When you can't find what you're looking for, make it yourself!
