Look of the Week: Canadian Lumberjack

One of my favourite Vancouver bloggers, Tairalyn of Little Miss Mama, inspired me to go lumberjack-chic after she posted her too-cute take on the cozy winter look a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I did not have a 'lumberjack-y coat, and so I froze my tail off taking this photos. The price we pay...

I found my plaid shirt while thrifting a while back (details to follow on Thrifty Thursday), and had declared I would buy it even if it didn't fit, just because the rose gold studs were so awesome! Thank god it fit. It's getting extra chilly out now, so thick socks are a must, as are my Olympic 2010 mittens; there's nothing wrong with a little patriotic spirit while staying warm. I forgot how early it's been getting dark these days, so by the time we got around to taking photos we were almost out of light! To my delight, all the local shops in Edgemont Village were still lit up, with many of them featuring sparkling Christmas window displays. All I needed was a peppermint hot chocolate to feel perfectly in the season!

Speaking of which, as I start to get into exam-mode (thus procrastination mode), I'll be pinning ideas to my Classy Christmas board on Pinterest. Follow me there, or wait here for me to unveil an inspiration post on some fashionable treats to get you in the festive mood!

Look of the Week: Chanel-inspired Colours

Inspired by the likeness of Chanel, my outfit this week is based on the very classic palette of cream and black. I've encorporated the hot peplum trend into this outfit, but its black colour keeps it looking refined.

If you're a big fan of blazers, try swapping out your usual cotton one for one with a cotton/wool blend (like my thrifted BCBG blazer here) to keep you warmer as the temperature starts to really drop. Keep extra cozy by tossing on a thick knitted infinity scarf. Want to sweeten the look? Bows and cameos will do the trick! It's all in the accessories.

You'll notice I don't fight the whiteness; many people start panicking this time of year about losing their 'summer glow'. Try something new for a change: ignore the hype and make that porcelain complexion shine! It's better for your skin, too :)

Thrifty Thursday

Black and red: my favourite colours! Perfect for fall.

Here's a bit of a departure from the usual peplum design. The volumous second layer is only made of tulle here! What really caught my eye, though, was the beaded detailing on the waist. This is the sort of thing I look for when I'm thrifting: something that really stands out!

Store: Value Village
Brand: Twelve by Twelve Los Angeles
Section: Short Skirts
What I Paid: $12.99
What it's Worth: $35.00

I will always be a fan of lace; it's so delicate and romantic. Here, it makes a basic shirt just a tad fancier (great for those days you want to look fancy but feel comfortable).

Store: Value Village
Brand: Red Haute
Section: Shirts
What I Paid: $6.99
What it's Worth: ~ $70

Right on trend! Leather (or fake leather, really) is on everybody's wish list this season, and while you can go out and spend a fortune on getting in on the trend, you can find all kinds of leather (and fake leather) designs in thrift stores in HIGH abundance! So take a look and see what you can find ;)

Faces West: Coco Rocha in Vancouver!

This past Saturday I joined the Vancouver Fashion Week team covering Faces West, an annual model scouting event in Vancouver. It's the event's 20th anniversary this year, and Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha was there to commemorate it, since it has been 10 years since she was first signed at Faces West.

The event went on for the week up until Saturday, at which point awards were given to the most successful models in their auditions, as well as a special celebration for the 20th anniversary. Coco had a few words to share about her first experience at Faces West and with modeling; I was pleasently surprised how genuine and outgoing she was - even doing a little dance on stage!

We got a chance to meet up with Coco before the show, and she kindly took a photo with me to share with all of you! I've met my fair share of celebrities, and I have to say, she seems incredibly down to earth for someone who has had as much success as she has. Just a lovely person!

We met with a few more people after the show her interviews, including this group of girls - who all came from Saskatchewan together! For an industry that is known for its volatile environment, these girls seemed like they were family! I suppose it's easy to be drawn to people who have the same dreams of success. One particular quote I heard during the event resonated with me: "a dream without a plan is a fantasy". I think this is a very wise statement; if you want to make dreams a reality, you have to try over and over until you succeed. Just like every one of those girls there hoping to be the next Coco, they got this far on talent, but perserverance will be what gets them even further.

Learning all about Faces West from its president, Charles Stuart.

The Fashionable World of 007

The newest James Bond film Skyfall hit theatres this week, and this girl is a BIG Bond fan! Seeing as how it was one of my best friend's birthdays, and she too is obsessed with Bond, I thought my friends and I could pull off a spy adventure as a suprise for her! I dressed up in my best spy attire, black head-to-toe, and carried my 'briefcase' while being tailed by the enemy.

I must say, I loved tilting my hat down low, with only my red lips showing; it gave me a sense of mysteriousness. I've always thought that half of how you feel is how you dress; and man, did I ever feel like a spy!

If you haven't seen it yet, get out there and watch Skyfall!! It was everything I hoped it would be and more!

The Bond girl in Skyfall, Sévérine, wears a fashionably daring outfit by Jany Temime in a casino scene. What do you think? I'm actually not as sold on this dress as I think we were supposed to be. I agree the 'tattoo' Swarovski crystals are gorgeous, but I'm just not a fan of the heavy black down the middle; it definitely accentuates the figure, but I think there are better ways of doing so.

When I saw Bond in this suit in one of the scenes in the movie he was missing the bow tie and wearing aviators. If I had the money I would literally get the suit and glasses shipped to me in a neat little package and hand it over to my man and say 'wear this. now.' This is literally the best looking outfit on a man I think I've ever seen. Hands down. It's hard to tell here, but if you watch the movie you'll understand. I loved the contrasting black and navy, with the satin lapels and stripes down the side of each pant leg. Unique, fashionable, and 100% awesome.

I much preferred Sévérine's look in this scene with far less makeup; you'll notice in the scene with her featured Bond girl dress that her make up is very heavy. I think she actually looked much better with a fresh face as shown here. Oh and I really want that silk and lace robe. Every girl should own that!

Designer Spotlight: Tramp In Disguise

During Vancouver Fashion Week, I had the pleasure of meeting Sini Moilanen of the fashion label Tramp In Disguise. Now one of my 'designers to watch', I thought I'd share a little more with you about this talented woman!

Sini is based out of the UK, where she also went to University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art. Her spring/summer 2013 collection named Lost City had me swooning over its unique prints and flowing details on the runway. Her collection first showed at London and Paris Fashion Weeks, before coming to Vancouver to showcase her designs. Tramp In Disguise's designs are fun, youthful, modern and edgy, and are quickly gaining popularity with celebrities and the press. The collection features a mix of structured and draped designs in an array of fabrics: I loved the sultry textures of silk and chiffon used.

The Lost City collection left me very intrigued about the inspiration and ideas that goes into making the designs. It's really interesting to get a sneak peek into the mind of  a fashion designer and see what sparks their creativity. Luckily, I got the chance to send Sini a few questions for her to answer about all these things:

Q: Do your London roots influence your fashion?

A: I think my bold colourful clothing is very much influenced by London. People in London aren’t afraid to be different. Most people like to have their own style and like to show off more than fade into the background.
Q: What made you decide on the name of your brand 'Tramp In Disguise'?
A: Tramp In Disguise name comes actually from what my friend called me when we were still studying fashion. I thought that was a funny name for a brand and it can be interpreted in many ways.
Q: What criteria do you have for a spring/summer collection? (Cuts, colours, prints)
A: I like to make summer collections colourful and use light and airy fabrics. The cuts come from the research I do for each collection. I do recycle popular shapes from season to season adding some new details and twist to them to make them a bit different from the previous collection. The SS13 collection ‘Lost City’ is inspired by Atlantis, the legendary island which is presumed to have sunk into the ocean in a single day. According to Plato, the city of Atlantis was known for its naval power which conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa and according to myth was ruled by Poseidon, the God of the sea, earthquakes and horses. The theme is reflected in the collection in the vibrant and bold pattern work, that’s sparked by the infusion of underwater creatures, priestesses, archaeological Greek art and Greek fashion. The collection carries an ocean-based likeness, conveying connotations of the beautiful salt water nymph Salacia in the distinctive colour palette of blue, sensitive light greys and dynamic greens, all silhouetted by black outlines to create shape and structure.
Q: How did you choose to translate the inspiration of Atlantis into your Lost City collection? What do the details and prints signify?
A: I have used watery blues, greens and grays in the colour palette inspired by the colours of the sea- according to the legend, city of Atlantis sunk into the sea in a day.The prints are inspired by Greek artefacts, pottery, jewelry, architecture and the corals of the sea. The shapes for the garments comes from my research of the historical Greek costume and architecture with a modern twist, for example the Thexilope skirt is inspired by Greek warrior costume and the strips on the arms of the garments are inspired by the arm bands the Ancient Greek used to wear.
My favourite aspects of the collection? The arm bands and the chiffon details. What do you like best?
