Look of the Week: Hot Faux Leather

Nothing says sophistication like an all-black ensemble, but when that feels too drab, it's time to throw in some faux leather and a dash of fire engine red to add some heat. Combining feminine accents like peplum and cat-eye shades with fierce leather and metallics create a look perfect for strutting down the city streets- or climbing a rock wall, apparently!

With the great fall weather we have here, it's warm enough to just throw a light coat over your outfit and run out the door. A little cool breeze? A trench coat is perfect. And with some stilettos, you'll look like a woman on a mission.

Thrifty Thursday

There were some pretty cool (and valuable) finds in Salvation Army this week! Things to learn from this trip: always take a quick browse at the jewelry case, and make sure you browse all the sizes.

The perfect art deco 1920's-style necklace! I always do a cursory sweep of the jewelry counter before paying for my newly found clothes at the cashier. Every once in a while, I come across something amazing like this. Always check and make sure the clasps aren't broken and all the jewels are still intact! Sometimes I can get a little carried away when I find something that catches my eye, but it's always good to give it a once-over.

You can never have enough sweaters! But what about something a little more unique? This one is really cool: the sleeves are knit, but the body is satin, giving it a more luxurious feel than a regular sweater.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Zara
Section: Blouses
What I Paid: $6.99

This is one glitzy and glam (and surprisingly comfy!) sweater. There were quite a few J.Crew items on the racks, which I haven't seen before at Salvation Army; let's hope this is just the beginning! And wow was I ever surprised when I looked up how much this sweater would have cost me in-store! This is one of my more valuable finds.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: J.Crew
Section: Sweaters (Large - always make sure to comb ALL the sizes! you never know how it will fit)
What I Paid: $9.99
What it's Worth: $295 (!!!)

Look(s) of the Week: Little White House Abbotsford

First of all, I hope you've noticed the big change here at Vancouver Vogue! Just like our wardrobes, sometimes blogs need a little makeover too. I hope you like the new look; I'd love to know what you think, so feel free to drop me a message!

I ventured over to Abbotsford to check out the Little White House & Co.'s newest salon café with blogger Kassandra of Kassinka. For those of you wondering if it is as utterly adorable and classy as the one in Fort Langley, it is indeed! We had some delectable high tea before checking out the collection of Parisian-inspired home decor and clothing in the LWH's shop.

I have never been very partial to the fall season, usually I much prefer summer, but I'm starting to think it's because I never had any particular inspiration in mind for fall. The problem with colder weather is that we often get sidetracked with the goal of just staying warm...and style just goes out the window. This season, however, I've developed a strong affinity towards preppy/equestrian style, and it's making me very excited about my fall closet! Shades of bright and dark red, navy, plaid, olive green, cream, and brown have dominated my inspiration lately.

Another style that I'm loving lately is collared chambray shirts over sweaters. I haven't attempted it myself yet, but Kassandra pulls it off perfectly in chambray and a sparkly knit. It's such a great way to keep cozy while looking casual yet polished. This lovely lady isn't just a style maven though, she's also an up and coming designer too! I first saw her designs at UFV's Absolute Style fashion show back in May: if you haven't seen them yet check them out, she put together a truly gorgeous collection of Russian-inspired pieces.

Thrifty Thursday

Bright hues are out this week: now it's all burnt oranges, faded browns, and classic black. I do love colour, but my favourite thrifted picks this week are toned down...yet still ever so fabulous. I love picking something up and immediately imagining what I can style it with.

My rule for sweaters: when in doubt, try it on! Well, that's really my rule for thrifting in general, but it especially holds true for sweaters. I thought I'd give this one the benefit of the doubt, and once I tried it on I had all kinds of ideas for how to wear it! My first styling will be with a pair of skinny dark wash jeans and brown leather heeled boots; an easy fall outfit.

Brand: ?
Section: Sweaters

There a few really great hats for fall, and this is one of them. The floppy felt hat has a bit of a boho feel to it, but to me it also seems to have the femme fatale vibe to it: I think it's how it shades your eyes. If you can find yourself a fedora, that would also be another good choice for fall, and there's always tons of them in the thrift store!

Store: Value Village
Brand: Express

I call this the pretty Parisian dress. It has my favourite classic combo of beige and black, and the simple cotton design makes for an easy-to-throw-on piece. I can just picture it with a cozy knit thrown over top and a pair of black polka dot tights and ballet flats.

Look of the Week: Transitioning to Fall Clothes (Part 2)

Last week I shared with you an easy transitional fall outfit using a maxi dress. If you didn't catch Part 1 of this summer/fall transition, check it out here. So today I have for you a look that takes a summer dress from cool to cozy! With the help of a thick knit sweater like this one, my summer dress is fall ready. I switched out my strappy leather heels for some heeled leather ankle boots, that polish off the look. Like I said last week, army green is a key trend this season, and you can see here that it can work with more than just utility jackets. For me, this look feels very Tommy Hilfiger-esque rather than army tough, though.

Thrifty Thursday

I talk a lot about finding pieces that are special: something with that little bit of embellishment or cut that makes it unique. Sometimes, though, it's great to come across some real classic pieces that will stand the test of time. This week, I found some great classic and basic items to add to my wardrobe.

The real wool blazer is a great transitional jacket to fall, since it's warmer than a thin blazer but not as thick as a pea coat. The colour is great too, as it's a nice pop of colour over darker fall tones.

Ankle booties are everywhere right now. They're great for adding some height, but are much easier to walk in than pumps. Plus, they'll keep my feet warm and dry! I love the hounds tooth print on the interior, too. I'm looking forward to styling these with a really classic Ralph Lauren-esque outfit.

Brand: Tommy Hilfiger
Section: Boots
What I Paid: $9.99
What it's Worth: ~ $100

Baseball hats have become a fashion fixture this year, and I'm still planning on getting my hands on one, but I like this baseball inspired look!

Look of the Week: Transitioning to Fall Clothes

Maxi dresses were a hug hit this summer, but now that the weather is cooling off, it's time to figure out which ones you can keep as part of your fall wardrobe. Obviously the ones with big flowers and bright colours may be a little harder to transition, but something in a deeper colour like this army green maxi works well. Today, I've styled it for the warmer days of fall. Think of this as the 'before' look. Army green is also going to be a hot hue this fall/winter season, as we've already seen with army green anoraks and utility jackets. If you don't have a maxi already, try it in green!

Next week I'll have the fall-friendly version of this look for you, so stay tuned!

Thrifty Thursday

My eye is on all things fall-related right now (no surprise)! Cozy sweaters and rich colours galore!

I'm officially on a sweater binge right now. When I'm powering through the racks of sweaters in the thrift store, I'm keeping an eye out for textures and detailing. I'm looking for that super soft feel of cashmere, some unique beading, cool buttons, or in this case, some chains...

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Dex Fresh
Section: Sweaters
What I Paid: $5.99
What it's Worth: ~ $70

I highly doubt this purse is real, but I just love the colour, style, and simplicity of it. A perfect small crossbody purse for fall.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Gucci?
Section: Purses and bags
What I Paid: $8.99
What it's Worth: ?

These aren't your average ankle boots! Booties are big this year, but you don't have to spend all your hard earned dollars on them. I've already found two pairs at the thrift stores recently, and combined they still saved me a ton (you'll see the other pair next week)! I love the unique style of these ones- and the hot red leather is going to make for an awesome pop of colour with neutral fall outfits.
