Instagram-Inspired Fashion Trends

Instagram has become the hub for all things fashion and beauty: as a visual medium, it's certainly the best way to share and discover inspiration. Today, I thought I would create an outfit featuring some of the biggest fashion trends I've seen on Instagram lately, all in one look!

Instagram trend #1: The sunglasses

Have you noticed these oversized Double Crossbar Metal Mirrored Sunglasses everywhere on Instagram? I picked mine up from Ilymix a while back, after seeing a few bloggers wearing them. My sunglasses never usually last more than a season or two (I always seem to lose them or break them), so I was in the market for some new shades. I've been wearing these non-stop the past few weeks and love them - I've had so many compliments on them! Plus they double as a touch-up mirror!

Instagram trend #2: Mermaid everything

As you saw in last week's beauty post on mermaid makeup, mermaid-themed everything has been a massive trend for summer, especially as seen on Instagram. Everything from faux mermaid tails to mermaid hair and mermaid bathing suits have graced the hashtag #mermaidlife. After seeing thousands of mermaid-inspired posts on Instagram, I spotted this 'Let's Be Mermaids' tank top at Value Village a few weeks back, and just had to have it!

Instagram trend #3: Fur slides

I've only seen a few of these on the streets of Vancouver so far, but #furslides have completely blown up on Instagram! AnaV Beauty was kind enough to let me try out a pair of their new fur slides, which just launched: it's all part of their InstaFamous collection. Compared to some of the other fur slides I've seen on Instagram, these are by far the nicest looking, and are super soft and luxurious. They make me think of glamified Adidas sandals - those ones swimmers always seem to wear at the pool. They're definitely a bit out there, but these fur slides are such a fun way to glam up an outfit, especially poolside (like you'll see below). Wouldn't they look fantastic with a swimsuit too?

When my mom saw my fur slides, she said "they are so Zsa Zsa Gabor!" It got me thinking I could totally wear them with my silk pyjamas while lounging at home too. Definitely gives me glam celebrity vibes, and who doesn't want that?

What fashion trends have you seen lately on Instagram? Have you tried any of them yourself yet?

Mermaid-Inspired Makeup

For those of you who are completely over the whole unicorn and mermaid trend currently sweeping the globe, from food to beauty, you might want to stop reading here. Unicorn and mermaid lovers, you can rejoice, because today I'm talking mermaid beauty here on Vancouver Vogue!

AnaV Beauty has just release their InstaFamous collection, complete with Insta-worthy mermaid-tailed makeup brushes, a Sugar Daddy Eyeshadow Palette, a Gold Digger Strobing Palette, and even some fur slides (which will be featured in Monday's outfit post!) to complete the Instagram Star look. With the brushes as inspiration, I set out to create a super fun mermaid-inspired look using the new collection - something that would be perfect to wear for summer!

That's the pretty mermaid makeup look, now keep on scrolling to see how to re-create it!

Highlighter & Contour:

I used the AVB Gold Digger Strobing Palette to create an Insta-worthy glow, using the golden shade on the top middle, applying along the tops of my cheekbones. The shimmery gold is so pretty and picks up the light nicely. I also used the bottom middle golden-bronze shade to do some light contouring. I love that it also came with a shimmery pink shade - I think this would be super pretty as a shimmery blush (or as a coloured highlight!).

Of course I used my mermaid brushes to blend everything in - they're vegan hair, super soft, and apply beautifully. It's been a long time since I had some new makeup brushes, so I was revelling at how smooth they applied compared to my well-loved, worn-in brushes.

Eye Makeup Look:

I was really keen to use the bright pink shadow in the AVB Sugar Daddy Eyeshadow Palette. I'm always drawn to vivid colours for makeup, and I thought this one would be perfect for my mermaid-inspired look. I kept things simple and used the hot pink shade all over the lid using the mermaid eyeshadow brush, and then applied a touch of the top left champagne shade to the corners of my eyes using the angled brush to brighten them up. I love the pairing of hot pink and turquoise (I don't know why but that's the colours I think of when I think 'mermaid'), so I finished off the eye look with my NYX Slim Eye Pencil in Teal. I just applied it along the bottom lash line, from corner to corner.

I just need to take a moment to talk about this pink eyeshadow because it is absolutely insane!!! The pigmentation is out of this world, and it has little gold flecks in it that are just gorgeous. It also stays on the lids really well, no creasing and no fading. At all. The best part of all? I barely had to apply any product to get the colour pay-off you see on my lids.

Oh and I'm awearing Teeez Cosmetics' Bulletproof Curl Mascara in Jet Black on my lashes, and Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Liner in Black for my cat-eye, in case you're wondering. I'm also wearing the Tiana Lipstick by AVB (the perfect nude lipstick!).

For the record, I think this look is totally wearable for summer! I threw on a palm print dress and went out to dinner with this makeup, and absolutely loved the look. I think it would also be fun for a pool party too (especially if you have a giant flamingo floatie in tow, to you complete your InstaFamous look)!

Summer Trends 2017: Embroidery

What's better than one summer trend? Two! This Rose Applique Off-the-Shoulder Dress from SheIn checks off two off the hottest summer trends (cold shoulder and embroidery) in one! Plus it's super affordable, at $17.99. Embroidery has been a break-out trend this summer, and while I appreciate it looks really cool, until I found this dress, I had a hard time finding a piece of clothing with embroidery that I felt fit my style. Most were jeans jackets and the like - just not a good fit. But this off-the-shoulder dress is so sweet!

I don't know about you, but I don't handle hot summers all that well; I always like to have a few dresses on-hand that are very loose and flowy - perfect to wear on a day when you don't want anything sticking to you. You can even wear this one without the belt and have it super loose, but I prefer a cinched waist, so I added this braided faux leather belt. I also like to match my accessories, my belt and my shoes, like I have here.

If you're trying to figure out "but what do I wear under it???", I wore a one-piece shapewear and tucked in the thin straps to make it strapless. Because the dress is white, it's a little less forgiving, so you'll want to make sure you're wearing something nude coloured underneath, and the shapewear helps just to make sure any lines are noticeable. Plus, the one thing I hate about strapless bras is that they're always riding down: the shapewear tends to eliminate that issue.

Have you tried the embroidery trend yet?

Preppy Equestrian Style for the FEI Nations Cup

You know me, I will never turn down an opportunity to don my preppy attire, and a day at the FEI Nations Cup Jumping, sure is good enough for me! It was a beautiful sunny afternoon (lucky us!), and I spent the day watching Canada, the US, Ireland and Mexico compete for the ultimate $100,000 prize. Swiss watchmaker Longines is the official timekeeper and sponsor of the event which is held at the Thunderbird Show Park in Langley BC. The classic, elegant, luxury watch brand certainly fits the aesthetic of the event (and I think one of their watches would have paired quite well with my preppy outfit, if I do say so myself...).

Now, this is a fashion blog here, so of course we're going to discuss what to wear if you're ever invited to such an event. A horse jumping event like this is definitely a different vibe than a Kentucky Derby or Deighton Cup type of event: it's far more laidback, style-wise. So rather than donning a huge hat, fancy dress and heels, I instead opted for (somewhat) more casual attire. When I started to brainstorm outfits though, I'll admit I came to a roadblock. When I usually think of equestrian style, I think of fall equestrian outfits like this one. Summer is definitely a bit more difficult. So I decided to go with a more preppy look instead!

For starters, I recommend choosing low wedges if you're going to wear heels, in case you end up walking the course. Longines invited us to see the jumps up close before the event began, and it was helpful to not be teetering around in high heels on grass. With the sun out in full blast, a good hat was a must-have - nothing too huge, and definitely not a fascinator, but something with a bit of a brim. As for the rest of the outfit, I've been waiting for the perfect time to rock this striped Tristan blazer that I thrifted from Salvation Army ages ago. Serious preppy vibes, right? Pair that with a pair of classy wide leg pants and a flowy summer blouse, and you're all set to go!

Thanks Longines for hosting us, and congrats to team USA for their FEI Nations Cup win!

West Coast Vibes

Living on the West Coast of Canada, we're lucky to have so much nature at our fingertips. From downtown Vancouver, I can see the ocean, and at the same time, am minutes away from the forest and the mountains. We're lucky to be in the centre of such an urban metropolis, and yet be able to breathe the fresh air of the great outdoors! Today, I wanted to share with you an affordable outfit that truly embodies West Coast style: combining city vibes with laid-back nature-inspired touches.

The necklace I'm wearing was handmade in Red Deer, Alberta by BEL Jewelry Boutique and is part of their West Coast Collection. I thought the style West Coast No. 2 would be the perfect piece to base this outfit on: a selection of bronzed and silvery leaves capturing the rugged nature and beautiful views of the coastline. I love the details on each leaf, and the long chain can be adjusted to wear short or long. Even better that it's Canadian-made!

As for the rest of the outfit, I wanted to stick to earthy tones, brown, green and beige. Vancouver and the West Coast in general is known for its laidback style, so comfy tees and loose drawstring pants made perfect sense (I'm going to ignore the fact that our city is also know for its insane love of yogawear). Add some metropolitan details like lazer-cut design heels, modern sunglasses, and a print bag to give the otherwise nature-inspired look a more 'concrete jungle' feel.

So, whether you actually live on the West Coast, or just want to dress like you do, I hope this give you some laid-back summer outfit inspiration!
