4 Ways to Transition Your Look to Fall

I always love fall style, but I must admit the first couple weeks of the season, when in transition from summer, can be a bit tricky. The weather isn't cold yet, but it's not hot either. It's a lot wetter now too (this is Vancouver, after all), but there can be really sunny break in the day too. You pretty much need to be ready for anything. That makes dressing pretty hard!

Here are my top 4 tips:

1. Dust off your trench coat. Trenches are the quintessential fall coat. They aren't necessarily waterproof (that's what your cute umbrella is for), but it keeps the wind from chilling you, and the length is good for keeping you dry from light rain. The beige colour is also a great neutral that will work with all your fall outfit colours.
2. Choose fall-appropriate colours. The easiest way to transition to fall is to say buh-bye to your brights and pastels! There's no reason you can't wear those fun colours in fall, but if you're struggling to transition to fall, it's easiest to just start wearing your summer shirts that are in darker colours. Black is always an easy one! I've put away my bright tanks for the season, but kept this black one in my closet for the fall transition.
3. Layer, layer, layer. As tempting as it can be to jump straight to cozy sweaters as soon as it rains, when the sun comes back out, you can end up overheating! After all, it's only September - it can still get pretty warm when it's not cloudy. I've been wearing sleeveless tanks with a coat over top, so when it clouds over, the coat will give me a bit of extra warmth, but if the sun breaks through, I can take it off and still be comfortable.
4. Pick your shoes wisely. I'm not ready to dive into boots quite yet, but I am cognizant of the rainy situation we're in now. My solution is these faux-patent leather flats. Unlike my other fabric shoes, rain water won't soak into these! They obviously won't keep water out if you step in a big puddle, but for quick jaunts to and from the car in the rain, they're perfect.

Look of the Week: Concrete Jungle

The statement piece in this week's look is a vintage Escada wool skirt I thrifted. The design makes up for its modest hemline with a thigh-high slit. To compliment the vintage feel, I added some classic pieces like patent heels and oversized sunglasses. While I usually prefer to stick to one statement piece, I don't think the striped shirt is too much, since the skirt is a solid colour. For a simpler look, you could swap out the striped top for a black turtleneck or boatneck shirt. Either would give a bit of a Hepburn-esque quality to the outfit.

I can't say I would recommend wearing this to the office unless you have a very liberal dress code, but I just love the idea of wearing it while out downtown, among all the concrete  and business suits. Dare to stand out! If you're looking for something to wear for Valentine's still, take a look through the skirt racks at your local thrift store- you'll find all kinds of unique and seductive skirts like this one (not to mention it'll be a bargain!).

Look of the Week: Army Green

The bestie/photographer and I made a stop for breakfast at Medina Cafe on Beatty St. in Vancouver before our shoot. I gleefully indulged in liege waffles with lavender milk chocolate topping and a delicious lavender mocha. I thought my obsession over everything lavender would be fleeting, but I have been craving this breakfast for a very very long time! If you haven't been to Medina Cafe, you need to try it out; the food is amazing and the decor is beautiful with it's exposed brick walls. We took advantage of the brick walls outside Medina for the backdrop of our Look of the Week shoot.

A hot trend this season is army green, but that doesn't have to include the usual camo print. I really like the faux leather paneling A great way to look put-together without a lot of effort is a loose-fitting sweater dress and leggings. Adding items like heels or a fur vest glam up the outfit, but you could also tone it down with some studded flats and ditching the vest for a blazer.

You'll likely recognize my red-soled heels from the DIY project I shared with you a few weeks ago. Here, they add a bit of sophisticated sassiness to the outfit. When I paired the heels with the sweater dress I realized I really liked the colour combination of bright red and army green. I added some red lipstick to the look to capitalize on this newly discovered colour combo.
