Look of the Week: Layering for Fall

I am learning the art of layering this fall, a style I have neglected in the past for fear of bulkiness. I've learned a key tip, though, that has made me love this great way of keeping warm this season. The first is to buy collared shirts a size up; I always felt too constricted in a collared shirt with a sweater over top; by sizing up, there's a little more room for comfort. There are 4 components to this look: an outer layer (vest, blazer, coat), a cardigan or sweater, a statement necklace, and a collared shirt. It's an easy way to look polished and preppy while staying cozy!

Thrifty Thursday

Some valuable finds in the thrift store today! 100% silk, leather trim, brand names...lots of good stuff to be found.

I present: the polished LBD! This is a great fitting dress; the quality is definitely there, but I wouldn't have been able to afford this dress at full price. Makes me feel like a very lucky girl! Just because you're shopping on a budget doesn't mean you can't have quality.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: Club Monaco
Section: Dresses
What I Paid: $12.99
What it Costs In-Store: $190

You should recognize these trousers from my Look of the Week on hot faux leather. I'm always telling you how I look for something special when I'm browsing the racks of clothes, well the leather trim definitely caught my eye. They can be dressed up like I did in my previous post, or they can be worn with a blouse and blazer for more work-friendly attire.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: River Island
Section: Pants
What I Paid: $5.99
What it Costs In-Store: ~ $50

Armani Exchange is one of the other brands my local Salvation Army store seems to get quite a bit of. It's straight from the store, not even used, so for those of you who aren't keen on wearing used clothes, there's another option!

Eco Fashion Week: Season 7

I regret not having attended Eco Fashion Week in the past; often, eco-conscious fashion has had a bit of a bad rap, with many people assuming it's all about hemp-woven fabric and bohemian designs. After seeing photos from previous seasons, I knew that this wasn't the case: eco fashion is a thriving industry, which celebrates all kinds of ways of being eco-conscious in the industry. It isn't just about using 'green' fabrics; it's also about using sustainable clothing production methods and buying in a sustainable way. Eco Fashion Week's Thrift Chic Challenge and 68 Pound Challenge aim to bring awareness to thrift shopping, as a way of recycling old clothes rather than creating demand for new ones.

As a dedicated thrifter for quite a while now, I had never really thought of thrifting as a way of being eco-conscious, but now it makes me feel like I'm reducing my ecological footprint. It was great to see how the 3 chosen designers/stylists Kenneth Barbie, Dandilion Wind Opaine (from Vancouver Fashion Week), and Claire Bouvier, chose to use (and modify) the items they found at Value Village to create their own collections. My hope is that people are inspired by their collections, and see that you really can look runway-ready with thrift shop finds!

The 68 Pound Challenge by Evan Ducharme was equally as inspiring. He dug through 68 pounds of clothing scraps (the average amount of clothing an individual wastes each year), and created a classic and refined collection that would have fit right in at any fashion week. All in all, it was an inspiration to see what can be created from the old, into something entirely new. For those who always thought eco fashion wasn't stylish, or that thrifted clothing couldn't be trendy, here's your proof that it doesn't get more fashionable than this:

Thrifty Thursday

There were some cool finds in the thrift store on this trip! All 3 have an element of a fall 2013 trend to them: sporty chic, leopard print, and wine colouring.

First came the sporty shoe wedge thingys, then came the varsity jackets. Usually I'm not one for sports (at all), but when I saw this jacket, I figured I could put a chic spin on it. It's interesting to note that this was in the 'light jacket' section, even though I'd consider it a sweatshirt; just a friendly reminder you need to look everywhere in the store so you don't miss something.

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: UK2LA (Sirens/Urban Planet)
Section: Light Jackets
What I Paid: $5.99

Don't forget to take a look through the scarf rack! There's usually piles of them, and there are some great ones to be found, from vintage silk to chunky knit. I love the leopard print that is popping up in accessories this season. Just another example of a current trend...found for super cheap in the thrift store! Next on my list are matching leopard pumps!

Store: Salvation Army
Brand: ?
Section: Scarves
What I Paid: $4.99
What it's Worth: ?

Wine ankle booties...two trends in one! And I love the dual texture. Not a super cheap find, but when I get all excited about a find like these, I don't mind too much.

Brand: H&M
Section: Shoes
What I Paid: $19.99
What it's Worth: $39

Look of the Week: A Preppy Twist on Fall Style

The leaves are just perfect right now! The air is cool and crisp, and it makes me want to throw on some plaid and knitwear and go for a walk around our colourful neighbourhood. Hues of cognac, wine, and cream are my go-to's right now: super classic, and they match the palette of fallen leaves. I've never really been a big fan of plaid, I didn't think it was very conducive to my refined style...but I've found that by pairing plaid with a classic sweater and feminine pearls, it fits in with my style just perfectly! Layering is great as the weather gets chilly, and I'm learning all kinds of stylish ways to do that with collared shirts and sweaters. I've got everything from plain blouses to plaid to chambray, that I plan to layer under a mixture of sweaters and cardigans. More to come soon!
