Tips for Dressing for Diner en Blanc

Diner en Blanc Vancouver is approaching quickly, on August 18th, and since this is my second time in attendance, I thought I'd share my tips for dressing for the event. If you haven't heard about it before, Diner en Blanc is an al fresco dining event that happens in a variety of cities worldwide, with a dress code and decor of all-white. Diners tote along their own chairs, tables, and dining pieces (and meals if they choose not to purchase) and converge on a secret location which is only revealed moments before the event!

I know a lot of people can find the event to be rather expensive considering you bring everything yourself, including your food, and pay for the opportunity. But I personally just loved the whole idea and the atmosphere, so I was more than happy to pay for the experience. I especially loved the live french music last year, that serenaded us as we ate amongst the thousands of other diners in attendance. It's quite a sight to be seen if you have the chance to attend.

If you were lucky enough to receive an invitation this year (or knew a fabulous person who is bringing you along), then here are a few things that might help while picking out your DEB outfit:

  1. Wear all white, head to toe! It's funny because it wasn't until I started to dig up some options for what to wear this year, that I realized that not everything in my closet that I thought was white was true white. The event calls for a true white dress code, as creams and off-whites tend to stand out and look quite dirty amongst the rest of the attendees in white. So make sure, before you walk out the door the day-of, that each item you're wearing is really a true white!
  2. Pick clothes you'll be comfortable in. I loved the dress I wore last year, but it was quite heavy, I was sweating, and well, I was hiking up the top all night. Not exactly ideal, especially on a hot day when you're trucking around your dining supplies. This year, I'm opting for a light cotton dress that's easy to move around in, and breathes easily. Keep it simple and jazz it up with accessories, that way you'll be comfortable all night.
  3. Focus on accessories. As I mentioned in #2, it's better to keep your clothing simple, and accessorize. I'm going to wear my favourite white earrings from Nobis & Grey, but anything in white, gold or silver will do. Statement pieces are perfect! Even add a hat or fascinator in white if you have one.
  4. Wear comfortable flats. You may end up doing a bit of walking to reach the venue, and remember you're carrying all of your dining necessities too, so comfortable footwear that's easy to walk in is key. Of course, you know me, I'll bring a pair of white heels along to change into once we arrive at the secret location. I didn't have a pair of white wedges, but wedges would honestly be your best bet if you have them. Don't have white shoes? I'd recommend hitting up your local thrift store or Value Village to find a cheap pair! No point spending a lot on a pair of shoes you'll only wear once.
  5. Bring a light sweater. I'm on the hunt for one right now. As soon as the sun goes down at the event, it can get pretty chilly, so it's best to have a layer your can throw over top. I'll be stopping by Value Village to find a cheap white sweater that I can toss in my bag!
  6. Have fun with your makeup! There's one thing that doesn't have to be styled in white: your makeup! Spice things up with a bright lip - orange and pink are favourites of mine. In the photos below, I'm wearing NYX Cosmetics' Soft Matte Lip Cream in Antwerp (from London Drugs). It also doesn't need re-applying (in my experience), so you won't need to touch up throughout the night.
And most of all, enjoy the experience once you're there! There really isn't anything else like it. And hey - if you haven't been able to score an invite yet, why not host a little all-white soiree on your own, with your sweetie or best friends?

New Year's Eve Outfit Inspiration

The New Year's is almost here, and as great as 2015 has been, I'm excited to start a whole new year fresh! I haven't thought all that much about resolutions yet, but I'm just ready to get a jump on all 2016 has to offer.

Twice a year, Christmas and New Year's, I get to pull out all of my sequin pieces, brush off the dust, and give them some TLC in the form of holiday outfits. As if sequin sweaters, shirts and pants weren't aplenty in my closet, I just couldn't say to no to this fabulous sequin skirt I spotted at Simons last week. It's great quality, made of a nice heavy knit, and not only that, but it was only $29.95! Now that's a deal Vancouver Vogue can get behind. I actually was really impressed overall by the new Simons at Park Royal in North Vancouver- it is definitely going to be my new go-to for affordable on-trend pieces.

We're planning a casual New Year's get together with close friends, so rather than a cocktail dress, I thought this skirt paired with a cashmere sweater and kitten heels would be a better fit for the evening. Cozy but festive! And of course, a few wonderfully sparkly accessories from Nobis and Grey don't hurt either.

Happy New Year!

Holiday Outfit Inspiration: Thriftmas

When on the hunt for an outfit to wear for Christmas eve this year, of course my first stop was the thrift store! I popped into Value Village on their 50% off day last month to start searching, and I actually came across the full skirt you see below in emerald and the exact same skirt in black! Both for $5 each! I definitely did a little happy dance in the store.

And for those who aren't big fans of wearing heels, I have great news for you, there are so many ways to look dressed up during the holidays while wearing flats! I'm starting to think these sparkly smoking slippers from Sole Society go with absolutely anything. If you haven't seen my more casual holiday look featuring the same flats, you can check it out here.

I've finally begun to accept that a lot of people these days don't want to get all dressed up, even for the holidays. But if you're like me, and full skirts and sparkly shoes are your thing, don't worry what everybody else is doing! Wear what makes you feel festive and confident!

Adventures in Fort Langley

This past weekend, we headed out to Fort Langley for the Little White House's Noel Vintage Market- what better way to spend the day with the girls! It was an absolute downpour out, but that didn't stop hundreds of people from stopping by for the Christmas market. It was so great to see so many new people discovering my favourite little gem of Fort Langley! There was a great selection of handmade and vintage DIY goods- it was like peeking into the wonderful world of Pinterest wins. It definitely got the ideas flowing for Christmas. And there are like 4 scarves that I may or may not go back for at Little White House. Because my obsession for blanket scarves is insatiable.

Once we'd taken a full tour of all the vendors, and snacked on holiday punch and gold-dusted macarons (yes, please!), we headed over to Krause Berry Farms for lunch. Best decision ever. We tried their roasted corn chowder (made on-site) with asparagus bread...and a giant apple waffle. Oh man. Unreal. With the rain beating on the roof, a cozy fire place by the table, rustic-inspired decor...it was such a great spot to spend the afternoon! And it couldn't hurt that wine tasting was 5 steps away in the same room. Shopping, food and wine: that's my idea of a perfect day.

Trip to the Pumpkin Patch!

I've been wanting to do a trip to the pumpkin patch for years now; it's definitely been a long, long time! So I headed to Aldor Acres with the bestie to relive our childhood (and rock some pumpkin patch appropriate outfits, of course).

The farm features a full pumpkin patch, hay ride tour, petting zoo...even a FARMacy (haha) to pick up farm fresh veggies and Grandma Anderson's homemade preserves. Yum.

We sipped some apple cider, and then took a hayride over to the pumpkin patch to find our prized pumpkins!
