Happy National Thrift Shop Day!

As an avid thrifter, National Thrift Shop Day is basically my favourite holiday. Ok, that may be taking it a bit too far - Christmas and Halloween are still in the lead - but I still love Thrift Shop Day.

Naturally, I thought I would celebrate with a trip to my favourite Value Village - the one on Hastings, for those in Vancouver. You can head over to my Instagram Stories right now to follow along during my thrifting trip there. You'll see some of the awesome finds I came across, as well as some thrifting tips along the way.

It's actually been a while since I've been thrifting. In the meantime, I've been compiling quite a big bag of donations: clothes and even some mugs and glasses that we just don't have space for. The best part of taking those into Value Village finally? A discount on my shopping trip! Woohoo!

I did pretty well during this trip. I usually try not to go in with high expectations, because I feel like that sort of sets you up for failure. You never know what you're going to find in a thrift store, which is great, but it also means you can end up walking away with nothing. That's why I like to go thrifting as often as I can though - it ups your chances! At the end of my trip, I ended up with:

  1. A Wilfred Chevalier jacket (I paid: $19.99, but it's worth: $225)
  2. A Mustard Seed dress (I paid: $13.49)
  3. A Forever 21 trench (I paid: $17.99)
  4. A Zara ruffle top (I paid: $8.49)
  5. A pair of shearling lined boots (I paid:$13.99)

I'm sure you can tell by the breakdown above that my most valuable find was the Wilfred Chevalier jacket. It's funny because I've literally only shopped at Artizia once in my life, but living in Vancouver, it's basically impossible not to be familiar with their clothes. I've seen these Chevalier jackets re-sold on Facebook selling groups enough times to know I'd found something pretty coveted. And when I went to run my hands along the fabric, I could see why. It definitely has a heavy, silky texture to it that you just can't help but love. And it hands beautifully when on. The one I found it juuuuust a tad small (it's a size 2, and I think a 4 would be a bit roomier on me), but I think it'll be fine, as it has some stretch to it.

But my favourite find of the day goes to the stunning red pleated Mustard Seed dress I ended up finding by a stroke of luck. I just happened to see the voluminous skirt peeking out from a rack, and even though the rack was labelled as size 9/10 dresses (and I'm usually a 6), I gravitated towards it to pull it off the rack. Right away, I could tell it was definitely not a size 9 or 10. And when I saw the Mustard Seed label, with a size 'Medium' on the tag, I had a real good feel it was going to fit like a glove. That's the trouble with clothes that are labelled as 'Medium' - every brand sizes their clothing differently, and that makes it extra hard when staff are trying to find out what rack to put an item on. So that's why I always recommend checking other racks outside of your usual size, just so you don't miss out on an item that could be your size.

As I mentioned above, I try not to go into a thrift store with any expectations, but I did tell myself to try and come home with some fall items, instead of more summer stuff. Which is why I'm pretty proud I ended up snagging that Forever 21 trench and the shearling boots! Definitely not summer items. I know the trench isn't some some fancy brand, but I like how the trench drapes, and I could use a trench in grey. And the boots caught my eye because the heel was fairly low and thick, so they'll be easy to walk in, even in the snow this winter. Look at me, thinking two seasons ahead!!

There were also lots of great brands I came across that didn't make the cut for me, but it was exciting to find them nonetheless. Like a pair of Rock and Republic ankle boots, a LaFayette 148 skirt which looked to be valued at about $300, a cute Calvin Klein dress, and I was also happy to see that Simons clothes are starting to trickle into the store (after the first West Coast store opened in North Vancouver a couple years ago).

All in all, a successful thrifting trip! And the best part of all? My shopping left no mark on the environment! I created no demand for new clothes to be made, and yet I have a bunch of 'new' clothes that I'm exciting to add to my wardrobe. Did I mention everything I took home only totalled $80?? Not bad at all!

I'd love to hear your best thrifted finds, and your best thrifting tips! Feel free to share in the comments below :)

National Thrift Shop Day with Value Village

Ah, a thrifters favourite day of the year! Last week, on August 17th, was National Thrift Shop Day. Value Village was up in Vancouver celebrating at our local Vancouver Aquarium, with a special art installation. The installation is made up of old disposed of clothing, in an effort to show people just how much waste we create when we constantly buy new clothes. In fact, Value Village is asking people to give a sh!rt about their fashion footprint by making smarter shopping decisions and reusing clothes that have already been produced.

It takes over 700 gallons of water to produce one cotton t-shirt, so making the choice to thrift your next t-shirt rather than buying it new, can make a bit difference to the environment! Now no one is perfect, and I still buy new clothes as well, but I make a concerted effort to focus on supplementing most of my clothing shopping by going to thrift stores like Value Village. And when I do go to the thrift store, I always make sure to donate more than I bring home!

So the next time you're looking for a new shirt, maybe stop by your local thrift shop first - you might be surprise by what you find!

Thrift Shop Day with Value Village

This Monday, August 17th was Thrift Shop Day - a chance for us to celebrate the awesome sustainable shopping experience of thrifting! And you know I'm a thrifting fanatic...

We started off our Thrift Shop Day celebrations with a little pampering at a special eco-friendly beauty salon in downtown Vancouver, E-Style Beauty Spa. They use natural and health conscious products, which made for the perfect spot to get pampered with Value Village and Eco Fashion Week

Value Village also created a very special art installation at Robson Square in Vancouver to for the special day, showing passer-by what 280 pounds of clothing looks like. Why 280 pounds? That's the average amount of clothing each family throws away each year. But Value Village is hoping to inspire people to break that statistic! You can help save all those pounds of clothing from going to our landfills by donating them to your local Value Village and shopping thrift.

If you've never been thrifting before, it can definitely be a little overwhelming at first; there is a LOT of clothing and searching to be done, but when you find that perfect find, it's all worth it! You'll love the treasure hunt. Plus, you'll know you're supporting local charities and protecting the environment by donating and buying donated goods!

Celebrating in my thrifted outfit:

Dress - Zara (thrifted), Shoes - Mei Xi (thrifted), Purse - (thrifted)

And of course, it wouldn't be a full thrifting celebration without some Value Village goodies! Carefully curated in VV red, I am positively in love with their reusable shopping bags and heart sunnies <3 Also, candle lovers take note: this candle from Rewined is made from a recycled wine bottle! They're cut by hand and filled with premium natural soy wax, and given the most wonderful scent- this one in mimosa (how sweet!). This is honesty one of the best smelling candles I own- now I want to try their champagne scented candle too! In the spirit of reusing, you can also recycle the candle when it's all done.

Good luck with your thrifting adventures,

Thrifty Thursday

Black never goes out of style! This week, I wanted to show you a few of my favourite thrifted outfit pieces I've found in the ever-classic colour black:

My eyes are drawn to pretty much anything with polka dots, so no wonder I picked out this skirt. What I really loved about this skirt though, is the shorter skirt lining: it makes the polka dots stand out even more! And it's right on trend. I recently wore this to the JCI Institute's Grad Fashion Show.

Leather (and faux leather) has made a real comeback in the last year, and I'm a huge fan of the styles with leather panelling and detailing (like this skirt)! I pretty much makes any style just a little more badass.

And here is a perfect example of another thing that always catches my eye in the thrift store: bows! I can totally see this dress worn with some classic pearls for a 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' sort of feel.

Thrifty Thursday

Time to hop on the sweater train this week! I love looking through the racks of sweaters at Value Village: you could almost spend an entire trip just there. On this trip, I found sweaters with all kinds of cool embellishments, from elblow pads to spikes to metallic threads.

There won't be any cuddling happening with the sweetie in this sweater! Other than the fact that the metal spikes are a little cold on my shoulder through the knit, this sweater is awesome. Ones like this are easy to spot on the clothing racks without even moving the hangers around: you can spot those spikes from a ways away!

Store: Value Village

Eco Fashion Week: Thrift Chic & 68lb Challenge Presented by Value Village

I have been looking forward to the Thrift Chic and 68lb Challenge at Eco Fashion Week for quite a while now! As an avid thrifter, nothing feels closer to home than a series of fashion shows dedicated to thrifted fashion. In honour of the 8th season of Eco Fashion Week, I put together an outfit of thrifted items to show just what the possibilities are. I hope that events like this really convince people that thrifted clothes don't have to be frumpy grandpa sweaters and ill-fitting pants: there are so many treasures, new and old that can transform your wardrobe into one that is unique and fashionable.

         Shirt-Forever21(thrifted), Skirt-Éclat(thrifted), Earrings-can't remember!, Ring-Forever21, Belt-thrifted, Shoes-Aldo(thrifted),                  Purse-JustFab

Kassandra, blogger and designer of Kassinka, in bright spring colours!

With the blogger and TV host extraordinare Samantha Sito of Obsessive Trend Invitation (her outfit is totally thrifted too!)

The fashionable talent behind Eco FashionWeek: Myriam LaRoche

Bumped into Stephanie Hung of Nina Tan Design (you can see my interview with her from VFW here)! So excited to be collaborating with her soon!

Thrift Chic Challenge

The thrift chic challenge really was everything I hoped it would be! I was excited to see collections that were 'runway ready'; something I think really surprises people, knowing the clothes are thrifted from Value Village. All 3 stylists/designers were given $500 each to shop the thrift store in search of everything they needed to create a runway collection.

Ghazal Elhaei: Man Up
Ghazal's collection of gentleman-inspired suits was so polished and refined; it was a great example of how thrifted outfits don't have to be over-the-top (think Macklemore). The men's patterned socks were the perfect addition. And the slightly cropped trousers? I think I feel a new trend coming on...

Jerome Insorio
Talk about beautiful pastels! Jerome did a fantastic job of finding hues that are right on trend: something people may not expect to find in a thrift store. The pieces themselves were individually quite impressive as well: the pants were trendy, and looked just like you would expect right off the rack in a high end retail store!

Hey Jude
This collection may not necessarily fit with my style, but I think the fashion duo did a great job playing with monochrome palettes and boxy silhouettes (think wide leg trousers and oversized tops). It was funny because the second I saw Lauren Clarke and Lyndsey Chow come out at the end of the show, the whole collection made sense to me: in their own thrifted outfits, they really pulled off the collection's look effortlessly!

Contemporary dance with recycled clothing as our entertainment for the evening

68lb Challenge

Young Oak
What a fun collection! Tammy Joe really made the 68 pounds of fabric go to good use. The average person wastes 68 pounds of clothing every year, hence this Eco Fashion Week challenge, which aims to show people just how much fashion can be made from these left overs. The results were truly amazing! My favourite? It's hard to argue with those adorable matching sweatshirts with Young Oak's initials on them...the cropped Disneyland sweater was pretty darn cute too...
