It's time to inject a little more bright colour into the wardrobe from now on...
One of my best friends was asking how to style red lipstick in a way that isn't as retro. So let this Look of the Week be inspiration for a look you can use some fierce scarlet and not feel like you're from the 40's (although, I personally never mind feeling like that!). The look is very preppy, but I've swapped out strict pumps for some that are a little more fun...and very high! Truth is out: I couldn't walk in them very long, but I love them :)
I've got lots planned for the next couple weeks, so expect more posts to come! I have a makeup tutorial coming up, and I'm planning on doing my basic makeup routine, but if you have another look you'd like me to walk you through, let me know!

Tips for Successful Thrifting
Now that school is back, I've found thrifting to be a perfect way to reward myself with a little shopping, without feeling guilty about spending too much. I really feel like I've accomplished something when I find the perfect deal! It can get very addictive- be warned!
Based on the success I've had thrifting over the past year, I thought I'd share some advice that will get you started!
1. Be patient and give yourself time to hunt: If you've ever shopped at Winners or Ross Dress for Less, you know what I mean. Be prepared to do a lot of sifting, and trying on heaps of stuff. If you try on 10 items, expect to only come out with 1 or 2. But it's worth it!
2.Don't stick to one size or one section: Many times I have found things that fit me perfectly...but were in the wrong row for that size. Keep looking even if you get into the racks of clothes you think are too big. The same goes for reading tags; they aren't a good indication of how it will fit. Sizes have changed a lot over the years, and sizes vary between brands too. Don't limit yourself to only 'dresses' or just 'skirts' sections either; I've found great dresses that were accidentally placed in the skirt section before. You won't find those special pieces if you aren't looking everywhere!
3.Look for brand names: An extra bonus to thrift shopping is finding not only cheap and unique pieces, but even designer brands! My latest find was a vintage Burberry skirt- it was far too big, unfortunately, but they're out there! Keep your eyes peeled for good fabrics, too, like 100% chashmere. I've seen it for as cheap as $7- regular price it would be at least $100!
4.Go often!: Thrift stores are restocking all day every day, so if you want to find the best of the best, you need to go frequently. This way, you get to see the new stock before it's been picked over.
I know some people aren't keen on buying previously worn clothing. Personally, as long as I wash it well before wearing it, I don't mind. If you can get past that, you'll find all kinds of amazing things for great deals! I tend to buy more because it's so cheap, so I'd recommend taking a bag of donations to make room for your new treasures!

Some Valentine's Inspiration
With Valentine's Day coming up in a couple of weeks, I thought it might be a good time to share some images that will be inspiring my Valentine's look this year. It may seem cliché to go with pink or red, but they really are a pretty palette. And you know how I feel about red :)!
If you're looking for how to spice up a more simple dress, look at some of the images of tights I found; there are some really interesting designs out there that will instantly make your look cuter or sexier..depending on what you're going for. My personal favourite are the vintage style hosiery with the black seam up the back of the leg. If you're going for a cute look, ModCloth as a pair of adorable heart tights...but they are currently out of stock, unfortunately. Hopefully they will be getting more in soon! You can find them here.
Sheer or lace fabrics are an excellent choice, and you can dress them up or down to make it subtle or sexier. Add a little red lipstick and winged liner to give the look a more retro-glamorous appeal.
If you're still trying to find the perfect dress, there are quite a few beautiful red dresses I would consider on ModCloth's site. I would have bought the Lady Love Song dress, but I already found a beauty at my local thrift store awhile back for a steal.

Look of the Week: Chinese New Year!
Happy Chinese New Year!
I thought I'd wear a red and gold themed outfit today in honour of the New Year. It isn't hard to find red in my wardrobe, but I even managed to find a red Chinese-inspired piece I've had for a very long time. The buttons along the left shoulder are just a taste of what a real Cheongsam dress would be like.
My favourite interpretation of the Cheongsam was designed by Alexander McQueen and worn by actress Anna Paquin a few years back. You can see it here. I would love to buy a real one eventually!

The shoes have a fierce look to them, with old fashioned tail lights on the heels. For a moment, it almost looked to me like a lipstick was coming out the back of the heel, but I got what they were going for.
Now, some people probably think these are just a little 'out there', and I won't be buying a pair for myself, but I considered how I would style them if I did. For a hot, sleek look, I would wear them with a pair of black skinny trousers, a fitted blazer, and a slightly oversized t-shirt. A tight ponytail keeps the look refined, while red lipstick adds to the fierceness of the auto-inspired heels. Is it coincidence that I picked driving gloves for a post on auto-inspired shoes? It was completely subconscious...but fitting, no? Throw on some shades to seal the deal!
I actually really like this look, now. Maybe I wouldn't mind a pair of these Prada inventions after all. Hopefully my dad, being a car fanatic, would be more understanding of me splurging on these hot rod heels??
What do you think; just plain strange or a bold new shoe? Would you wear them? They'd be sure to make a statement either way!

Designer Spotlight: Prada Auto-Inspired Shoes 2012
My boyfriend forwarded me an article on Gizmodo presenting Prada's new 2012 Spring shoe collection, inspired by Classic American cars. The shoes have a fierce look to them, with old fashioned tail lights on the heels. Look of the Week: My Design DIY
Voila! I present to you: my first design. Now, I admit I really only designed the skirt, which appears here as a gown; but I designed the skirt with this style in mind. I actually debuted it at a Christmas Formal at school last year, and it got quite a few stares and comments. Probably because no one around here wears a gown. Ever. Well, maybe to the opera or something, but that's about it.
So the dress is made from a layer of silk and a layer of silk chiffon. It's done with a simple elastic waist, which is easily hidden by a thick belt. A corset or strapless top finishes off the style, so that it appears as if it's one seemless look.
The design was inspired by a dress by Jenny Packham back in 2010, seen here. It ended up looking very different than her design, but the idea of a light flowing chiffon skirt with a structured corset top is still evident.
If anyone hears of a soiree I can wear this beauty to, let me know! For now, it hangs in my closet looking very lonely..

So the dress is made from a layer of silk and a layer of silk chiffon. It's done with a simple elastic waist, which is easily hidden by a thick belt. A corset or strapless top finishes off the style, so that it appears as if it's one seemless look.
